T2009-048 Biological control tools for reducing the impact of fusarium head blight (FHB) on grain production.

The Need

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a disease of wheat and barley caused by a fungus that produces a mycotoxin known as deoxynivalenol (DON), which is dangerous to livestock, domestic animals and humans. Infection results in wide-spread crop destruction requirements, leading to reduced yields for grain farmers, reduced product on the market for consumers, and ultimately lost revenues for producers. Currently, there are a lack of consistent methods to control the outbreak of FHB, as biological control of FHB across large-scale fields has proven difficult. Thus, the need for an effective and comprehensive means to control FHB infections remains critical for grain farmers and producers..

The Technology

Researchers at the Ohio State University's College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) have developed a biological control method to reduce FHB prevalence among wheat yields. The biocontrol has been tested in both greenhouse and field studies, demonstrating effectiveness in reducing infection rates in wheat. Pending additional field trials on different grains, and ultimately FDA approval, this technology will be well positioned for commercialization opportunities.
