The Need

Oboists often struggle with fundamental elements of their playing, such as pitch accuracy, phrasing, and response, due to the complexity of managing the instrument as a whole. Traditional practice methods may not allow for the isolated focus necessary to correct these specific issues. There is a need for a pedagogical tool that enables oboists to improve these foundational skills in a manner that closely mimics actual playing, without the distractions of full instrument use.

The Technology

The Reed Held is an innovative tool designed for oboists to improve essential aspects of their playing by isolating the reed from the instrument. It holds the oboe reed just outside the instrument, allowing the player to work on air control, embouchure, and hand positioning simultaneously. By focusing on these elements in isolation, oboists can refine their techniques with a more accurate sense of how they will transfer to full playing. The Reed Held's unique design enables oboists to address specific issues such as pitch, phrasing, and response without the distraction of changing pitches.

Commercial Applications

  • Refining pitch accuracy by practicing baseline pitch control.
  • Enhancing phrasing techniques through focused air control exercises.
  • Improving note response by isolating and correcting air inconsistencies.
  • Developing embouchure strength and consistency in a controlled environment.
  • Facilitating advanced practice techniques without the full oboe setup.

Benefits/Advantages

  • Allows focused practice on critical elements without the distraction of full instrument use.
  • Improves the transfer of isolated practice to actual playing.
  • Enhances the precision of pitch, phrasing, and response in oboe playing.
  • Easy to use, portable, and adaptable to individual practice routines.
  • Cost-effective tool that complements traditional oboe training methods.
