T2019-127 Dynamic AVF flow control: A paradigm shift in vascular access management for hemodialysis patients.

Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis (HD) face critical challenges in maintaining functional vascular access. Despite the superiority of arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) in terms of longevity, infection rates, and cost-effectiveness, over a third of AVFs fail to mature after creation.

The Need

Intimal hyperplasia and restricted blood flow are major hurdles for maturation of AVFs. Surgical creation of AVFs with controlled high blood flow can enhance maturation rates, yet uncontrollable flow can lead to severe complications. There’s a clear demand for an innovative solution that empowers medical professionals to modulate AVF flow rates efficiently.

The Technology

Researchers at The Ohio State University have developed a cutting-edge device design that offers remote adjustment of AVF diameter, providing precise control over blood flow within the AFV. Achieved through a specialized band encircling the AVF, this adjustable component can seamlessly expand or contract, acting as a dynamic “faucet” control mechanism. By enabling healthcare providers to tailor blood flow according to patients’ needs, our technology addresses the challenges associated with AVF maturation failure and complications arising from uncontrolled blood flow rates.

Benefits/Advantages

  • Precise Flow Control: Healthcare providers can adjust blood flow rates remotely, ensuring optimal AVF maturation without complications.
  • Individualized Treatment: Tailored flow control caters to each patient’s unique physiological requirements, enhancing treatment outcomes and safety.
  • Complication Mitigation: Controlled flow minimizes the risks of adverse effects associated with uncontrolled blood flow, enhancing patient safety.
  • Enhanced Patient Comfort: Customized flow management improves patient experience during hemodialysis, reducing discomfort and complications.
  • Cost-Effective Care: By reducing the need for corrective interventions and complications, our technology contributes to cost-effective healthcare delivery.
