The Need
Development of models for materials with complex microstructures is time consuming and expensive. Also, different commercial modeling software tools have various standards, which makes importing and exporting between modeling systems problematic and difficult.
The Technology
Dr. Soheil Soghrati at The Ohio State University has developed the Conforming to Interface Structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement (CISAMR) software program, an automated modeling technique that enables transformation of a simple structured grid into a high quality finite element mesh for modeling problems with highly complex microstructures. The method can fully automate the process without the need to draw a CAD model or manually generate the mesh. The software, programmed in C++, is developed based on this technique with successful implementation for 2D problems and a 3D version currently under development.
