Ohio State Named Among Top 100 U.S. Universities for Patents by NAI

The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has named The Ohio State University one of the Top 100 U.S. Universities granted U.S. utility patents in 2024, recognizing the university’s leadership in research, innovation and the translation of discoveries into real-world impact. Based on data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the list highlights institutions that are driving meaningful technological advancement through patented research.

Published annually, the ranking showcases the essential role universities play in advancing the innovation economy and emphasizes the importance of protecting and commercializing new ideas.

“This recognition reflects the creativity and dedication of our researchers, and the strength of our innovation ecosystem,” said Kevin Taylor, chief innovation officer at The Ohio State University. “Every patent captures innovative ideas from our researchers—and reflects the potential for Ohio State research to improve people's lives.”

This U.S.-focused ranking complements NAI’s global list and is one of three annual rankings released by the organization. You can view the full list of Top 100 U.S. Universities on the NAI website. Institutions on the list will be recognized at the NAI’s 14th Annual Conference, June 23–26, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia. Honorees will receive a special recognition ribbon on their conference name badges.
