Student Scholarships
TREP annual distributions support the Honda Scholarship, which was the second largest donor-funded undergraduate scholarship at the College of Engineering in 2023-24 by dollars awarded. Each year Honda has given STEM Awards to high school seniors in central, west and southwest Ohio. Any of these students who attend Ohio State are eligible to apply for the Honda Scholarship. For the 2023-24 academic year, 72 students received the Honda Scholarship, with a total amount awarded of $204,000.
The 72 recipient students represented nine different engineering departments, and several non-engineering disciplines, with the most numerous majors being Computer Science and Engineering (12), Electrical and Computer Engineering (7) and Chemical Engineering (5). Recipients were from 24 different counties, with the largest contingents from Franklin County (13), Hamilton County (6), Allen County (6) and Miami County (6).
Since first being awarded in 2005-06, the Honda Scholarship has disbursed over $3 million to 335 Ohio State undergraduates. Support for the scholarship has grown significantly over time. In the scholarship’s first five years, it averaged $69,000 a year distributed among 28 students. Over the past five years, it has averaged $233,000 a year distributed among 81 students.
After 19 years of impact, the Honda STEM Award for high school students is being retired. New awarding criteria that defines specific engineering and/or business majors, as well as a desire to work in the automotive industry, has been established and will take effect for the 2024-25 academic year recipients.
