Circular Wave Drive
T2014-162 An improved speed reducer mechanism which promotes high speed reduction ratios and backdrive compatibility.
The Need
Speed reducers are mechanical devices utilized in heavy machinery and robotics for controlled manipulation of servo motor speeds. Harmonic drives and cycloidal drives are examples of speed reducers designed to maintain high gear ratios while simultaneously preventing backlash from occurring due to misaligned gear teeth. However, harmonic drives have limited gear reduction capabilities due to their restricted power input levels and higher ratios incur the risk of fatiguing the flex spline material, which effectively reduces its lifespan. Harmonic drives are also very sensitive to operating environment and not capable of high temperature or stress operations. Cycloidal drives are also not compatible in applications where backdrivability, or the mechanism where input and output shafts can rotate in the reverse motion, is needed for safe operation of robotic arms to prevent accidents.
The Technology
The Circular Wave Drive features a novel design comprising an enclosed housing with a chamber, a ring-shaped wheel within the chamber, and a wave generator inside the wheel. The wave generator drives the wheel, which transfers motion to an output element. This design minimizes material fatigue and reduces the number of moving parts, enhancing durability. The innovative friction elements within the system ensure smooth operation and long-lasting performance, addressing the limitations of traditional drives by providing a more straightforward and robust solution.
